I remember way back in the late 1950’s, my friend had a 1930 Ford Pick up that was all “souped” up. He had a 48 Merc Flathead, La Salle transmission and every thing else to make it go fast…and it did!
This particular Ford Stake truck, called that because of the wooden stakes on the bed of the truck, was owned by a worker of an asphalt paving company. It was used in the actual asphalt repair and paving, and saw at least 300,000 miles of wear and tear. No one bothered to maintain it, keep it clean or painted, so it wasted away. Finally it blew a head gasket, they tried to fix it but their heart just wasn’t in it. After taking off the head, (see it on the running board), it was just too much work, so they left it where it lay. Eventually, the door came off, a wheel was removed, and nobody bothered to empty the barrel of pavement oil in the back. Of course today that is not what we would call environmentally correct!
